For three months we have been enjoying fresh apples for snack. Today we learned how to make applesauce. Teacher Ann learned how to make applesauce from her grandmother. Her Nana taught her to core and seed apples, cut them into chunks, steam them on the stove until soft. We each washed and dried our own apples, separated and seeded the apple chunks, collected the cores for compost, and put our apple chunks one piece at a time into a steaming cooking pot. When the apples were soft, we squeezed the apples through tiny holes in sieve. The applesauce dripped into a bowl underneath the sieve. Ten large apples made a lot of applesauce. We had applesauce for three days at snack time and found that we enjoyed it both warm and cold. Homemade applesauce tastes wonderful with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, too!
