On Feeling the Way You Do...

Kindergarten children have been talking in Meeting for Community and informally at lunch time and siesta about their worries and fears. We have read books about feeling worried, being scared, and having courage.

Today we invigorated our senses with a sensory walk looking for all the colors of the rainbow we could find outdoors in leaf and petal, from the blossoms of the sunset honeysuckle to the gently minty fragrance of the mint in our garden.

Indoors we drew pictures of things that bring us joy and make us feel happy on fabric with fabric markers. On the reverse side we created a multi-layered nature "pizza" by layering the leaves and petals we collected on our sensory walk. After admiring the beautiful colors and the diversity of shapes of the petals and leaves, we pulled up the edges and tied the fragrant bundle with string to wear around our necks.

In China, children wear xiang bao to protect them from their worries and fears. Here at Friends School Haverford, we are doing the same! By the time we had finished (over an hour later, beginning to end) we were feeling calm, centered, and very, very happy with our morning's work)
